Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to Affirmative Psychological Services! Below are answers to common questions about psychological evaluations, insurance, scheduling, and what to expect. Please feel free to reach out if you would like additional information.
Services and Evaluations
What types of psychological evaluations do you provide?
I provide comprehensive psychological evaluations for adults ages 18 and older. My areas of expertise include ADHD, autism, complex posttraumatic stress, dissociative conditions, mood disorders, anxiety, personality functioning, and related mental health concerns. Evaluations consider the full clinical picture rather than focusing on one diagnosis in isolation.
Can I receive an evaluation for ADHD or autism?
Yes. I specialize in adult ADHD and autism evaluations, including assessments for people whose symptoms may have been overlooked, misunderstood, or attributed to other conditions. My approach considers developmental history, current functioning, personal strengths, and possible co-occurring conditions.
Do I need a referral or an existing diagnosis?
No. You can contact me directly without a referral or previous diagnosis. Many people seek evaluations because they have unanswered questions about their experiences, symptoms, or support needs.
Do you provide therapy or prescribe medication?
My practice focuses on comprehensive psychological evaluations rather than ongoing psychotherapy or medication management. I regularly provide individualized treatment recommendations and referrals to therapists and medication providers.
The Evaluation Process
Are evaluations offered virtually or in person?
All services are provided virtually. You can participate from a private, comfortable location without traveling to an office.
What should I expect during the evaluation?
The process begins with background questions and standardized psychological surveys, which you complete at your own pace. We then meet by video to complete brief cognitive testing and structured diagnostic interviews, and to discuss your history, current concerns, strengths, and goals. I review all available information before preparing a confidential psychological report with your diagnostic impressions and recommendations.
How long does the evaluation process take?
Your written evaluation report is typically available within one week of our video meeting. The overall timeline depends on insurance verification, scheduling, and completion of the required surveys.
What if I have difficulty completing surveys or need accommodations?
You can complete most surveys at your own pace and take breaks as needed. Accommodations are also welcome during our video meeting, including breaks, comfort items, and adjustments for sensory or accessibility needs. Please let me know what would make the experience more comfortable.
Will I receive a diagnosis?
You will receive a comprehensive evaluation that considers all relevant diagnostic possibilities. Diagnoses are made when supported by the clinical findings. An evaluation does not guarantee a particular diagnosis.
Will I receive a written report?
Yes. Your report includes the evaluation findings, diagnostic impressions, and individualized recommendations for treatment, support, and accommodations. The report is delivered electronically through your secure client portal.
Insurance and Payment
Do you accept insurance or Medicaid?
I accept most insurance plans including Medicaid. Coverage depends on your specific insurance plan and provider participation. I personally verify insurance benefits before scheduling and explain the information provided by your insurance company.
Unfortunately, I am temporarily unable to accept Colorado Access due to substantial unresolved reimbursement issues for psychological evaluation services that are covered by all other Colorado Medicaid plans. I am working with Medicaid to clarify and resolve these issues so I can resume assisting Colorado Access members.
How much does an evaluation cost?
Private-pay comprehensive evaluations cost $1,600. For clients using insurance, costs depend on the plan's negotiated rates, deductible, copayments, and coinsurance. I provide estimated costs before scheduling so you can make an informed decision.
Do you offer sliding scale fees or payment plans?
Yes. Sliding scale discounts and payment plans are available for people experiencing financial difficulty. Individuals receiving covered services through Medicaid are not charged for those services.
Reports, Documentation, and Privacy
Can I use my evaluation for work or school accommodations?
Yes. Evaluation reports may include individualized recommendations for workplace and educational accommodations. I can also prepare separate supporting documentation when appropriate.
Do you provide disability, ESA, or WPATH-related documentation?
Yes. I can consider documentation requests related to disability benefits, emotional support animals, gender-affirming care, and other clinical needs. Documentation is based on the evaluation findings and applicable clinical requirements. Related letters and forms are provided at no additional cost.
Can I request changes to my evaluation report?
Yes. You are welcome to request corrections involving spelling, grammar, privacy, or factual information and to discuss recommended accommodations. Diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations reflect my independent clinical judgment and are not changed solely upon request.
How is my privacy protected?
Your privacy is a priority. Intake forms, confidential messaging, appointments, and evaluation reports are managed through a secure client portal. I am also happy to discuss privacy concerns and documentation preferences before beginning the evaluation.
Scheduling and Communication
How do I schedule an evaluation?
Start by sending a brief email describing your evaluation needs. If you would like to proceed, I will invite you to my secure client portal to complete the required forms. Insurance verification is completed before scheduling.
What if I need to reschedule or cancel?
I understand that health, work, and personal circumstances can change. You can reschedule without additional fees. I do not charge for missed appointments.
How can I contact you with questions?
Email is the best way to reach me. I personally respond to inquiries and provide written information so you can review it at your own pace. You are welcome to ask questions without any obligation to schedule.
You are welcome here. My goal is to provide thoughtful, evidence-based psychological evaluations that
respect your experiences, recognize your strengths, and help you make informed decisions about your care.
